The Craigieburn Valley Ski Club is acting to protect the environment of this beautiful part of Aotearoa. Members of the ski club take it in turns to clear and rebait stoat traps that have been installed in the valley. In the past year 17 stoats and weasels have been caught in our traps. As a male stoat can have a range that is 200 hectares, eliminating this number of pests can have a positive effect over a large area. Stoats are responsible for the deaths of around 50% of chicks of our larger native birds; it is likely that they wreck even more havoc on our smaller birds and invertebrates. They really are public enemy number one.
We do not operate in isolation, instead our trapping is conducted within the Craigieburn Trapping Alliance, a group set up to enhance the environment of the whole Craigieburn Range.
